Traditional roles in aikido include nage (one doing the technique; or, thrower) and uke (one taking the fall; or, receiver) however, the emphasis in training should be on helping the receiver develop in the art of falling, rolling, receiving, etc., not necessarily on developing the nage, or “thrower”.

The art of receiving energy and turning it into something else, ukemi, is often misunderstood as a practice and misunderstood as to it’s role (no pun intended!:)) in aikido training classes.
